
NSWIS Sailor John Forbes
Six-time World Champion and Olympic medalist John Forbes (born 29th January 1970) began sailing aged 10 and was racing yachts by the age 12. With tornado sailing partner Mitch Booth, Forbes won bronze at the 1992 Olympic Games.
Missing out on the 1996 Olympic team selections, Forbes was determined to win a medal at the 2000 Olympic Games and partnered up with new skipper Darren Bundock. The pair sailed together for nine years and took out Olympic silver in 2000 and four World titles at the 1998, 2001, 2002 and 2003 World Championships. The pair finished sixth at the Athens Olympic Games.
Forbes was an NSWIS Scholarship holder from 2001 until 2005. From 1998 to the year 2000 Forbes was an associate scholarship holder. Forbes won the NSWIS Team Athlete of the Year award in 2003 and was a finalist for the Athlete of the Year award in 2001.
Forbes was Australian Yachtsman of the Year in 1992, 2002 and 2003. In 2003 he was a finalist for the International Sailing Federation’s (ISAF) Rolex World Sailor of the Year Award.
