NSWIS Athlete Kurt Fearnley
Kurt Fearnley OAM, (born 23rd March 1981) was born with lumbar sacral agenesis. Since first competing for Australia in 1995, Kurt has achieved phenomenal success, including five Paralympic medals from the Sydney 2000 and the Athens 2004 Olympic Games. He holds Australian Records for the T54 400m, 800m, 1500m, 500m and marathon.
Fearnley is widely known as the ‘marathon man’ because of his superb big-city marathon record. Between late 2006 and April 2007, he won seven consecutive marathons. It was during this time that Kurt won gold at the prestigious New York Marathon 2006. He won the event in style, surviving a crash and breaking the course record with a time of 1:29.22. He retained the title in 2007.
Fearnley has been an NSWIS scholarship holder in the Wheelchair Track & Road Program since 1998. He was a finalist for the NSWIS Male Athlete of the Year in 2006 and both the NSWIS Athlete of the Year Award and the Outstanding Achievement Award in 2004. In 2007 he was the NSWIS Athlete of the Year and the inaugural winner of the NSWIS Most Memorable Moment Award.
