Australia’s future in the pool is looking good if you look at the results of Matthew Jaukovic. A naturalised Australian, Jaukovic has turned heads in recent times after his performance at the Australian Short Course Championships in Melbourne.
Jaukovic broke two Australian all-comer records in the 50m and 100m butterfly, and was only 0.15 outside the 50m butterfly world record. A good result considering he was a relatively unknown coming into the meet.
Jaukovic was born in Montenegro, before moving to Australia in 2005, to advance his studies and swimming career. Living away from his close family would be difficult, as they still reside in their home town of Herceg Novi in Montenegro.
He is currently studying an Economic/Law degree at the University of Sydney. “I have concentrated on my studies over the past three years and have only really started training four times a week before increasing my work load to six and seven sessions”
Even after breaking the Australian All comers record Jaukovic was hoping to go better. “I actually hoped to swim 49 tonight but I’m happy with that time”.
Jaukovic will be hoping to gain selection into the World Cup team at the end of October, with eyes on the true prize of the London 2012 Olympic Games.
