Australia has a solid history of achieving outstanding results at the Commonwealth Games. NSWIS athletes, in turn, have been a part of some terrific individual and team performances.
At the Commonwealth Games in Manchester in 2002, 81 NSWIS athletes represented Australia. 10 coaches also travelled to Manchester as part of the Australian team. Forty-four athletes were involved in medal winning performances with 28 gold medals, 18 silver and 18 bronze.
At the 2006 Commonwealth Games the NSWIS supported 73 athletes. They won 19 gold, 13 silver and 13 bronze medals. Had the NSWIS competed as a nation they would have finished fifth on the medal tally, with results bettering countries including South Africa and Canada.
