Summer Games
The NSWIS has a rich history of competing in the Olympic and Paralympic Games, since the Institute’s inception in 1996.
In 1996, 63 athletes and 11 coaches participated in the Atlanta Olympic and Paralympic Games. NSWIS athletes brought home two gold, three silver and eight bronze medals.
At the Sydney Olympics, in 2000, 155 NSWIS athletes represented the Australian Olympic and Paralympic teams (134 Olympics,21 Paralympics). At the Olympic Games 49 NSWIS athletes were part of 22 medal-winning performances across nine individual and team sports – seven gold, six silver and eight bronze. At the Paralympics, seventeen NSWIS athletes won 25 medals – 11 gold, nine silver, four bronze.
In 2004, 149 NSWIS scholarship holders were selected in the Australian team for the Olympic and Paralympic Games in Athens. 130 NSWIS Olympians returned home with six gold, seven silver and four bronze. 23 NSWIS scholarship holders competed at the Paralympic Games and won seven gold, 15 silver and eight bronze medals.
At the 2008 Beijing Olympic Games the NSWIS was well represented with 122 athletes selected on the Olympic and Paralymic teams (86 Olympics, 36 Paralympics). NSWIS Olympians brought home 3 gold, 4 silver and 5 bronze. Our 36 Paralympians won 6 gold, 13 silver and 8 bronze medals.
Winter Games
At the Nagano Winter Paralympic Games, NSWIS athlete James Patterson won one gold medal and one bronze medal. These medals accounted for all of Australia's medals at the 1998 Winter Paralympics, resulting in a 16th place finish on the medal table.
At the Salt Lake City Paralympics, two NSWIS athletes contributed to seven medal winning performances. Michael Milton won four gold medals, while Bart Bunting won two gold medals and one bronze medal. As a nation, the NSWIS would have finished ninth on the medal table.
In Turin, two NSWIS athletes won two medals. Michael Milton won a silver medal and Toby Kane wone a bronze medal. These medals accounted for all of Australia's medals at the 1998 Winter Paralympics, resulting in a 13th place finish on the medal table.
The 2010 Winter Olympic Games saw NSWIS athlete Torah Bright claim the Institute's first Winter Olympic gold medal, winning the women's snowboard half-pipe.
NSWIS athletes also contributed to four other top 10 finishes at the Games. Scott Kneller finished seventh in the men's ski cross, Holly Crawford finished eighth in the women's snowboard half-pipe, Emma Lincoln-Smith finished 10th in the women's skeleton, and Damon Hayler finished 10th in the men's snowboard cross.
At the 2010 Paralympic Games NSWIS athlete Marty Mayberry claimed silver in the men's standing downhill and fellow NSWIS athlete Toby Kane finished 10th in the same event.
