The NSW Institute of Sport would like to congratulate the 122 NSWIS scholarship holders who were part of the Australian Olympic and Paralympic teams.

Of the 86 NSWIS athletes that competed at the Olympic Games the NSWIS had 24 NSWIS athletes contribute three gold, four silver and five bronze medals equating to 26% of total medals won.

The NSWIS had some outstanding gold medal performances, diver Matthew Mitcham became the first Australian Olympian to win gold in the men’s 10m platform diving event. Mitcham’s final dive scored 112.10 points, the highest scoring dive in Olympic history.
 

Sailors Malcolm Page and Nathan Wilmot won Australia’s first Olympic sailing medal in eight years, winning gold in the Men's 470 event. Lara Davenport also won gold as part of the women’s 4x200m freestyle relay squad.

Of the 36 NSWIS Paralympians 34 athletes contributed to six gold, 13 silver and eight bronze medal winning performances.

NSWIS swimmer Peter Leek shone winning eight medals from eight events; including, three gold, four silver and one bronze at his debut Paralympics. NSWIS wheelchair track & road star Kurt Fearnely won back to back gold in the men's marathon.
