World cup winners

15 March 2010

The Australian Kookaburras have overcome the odds to claim the 2010 Hockey World Cup in Delhi, India by defeating Germany 2-1. In winning the title Australia claimed their first world cup in 24 years after having been defeated by Germany in the previous two finals.

After an early goal to Eddie Ockenden both teams focused on strong defensive performances. The sixth minute goal was the only score posted in the first half as Australia led into the sheds.

The second half proved equally as tense as the first. The Germans equalled in the 48th minute, however Australian then edged ahead once more after a goal to Luke Doerner in the 59th minute.

From there Australia was able to hold on and be crowned 2010 World Cup Champions.
