2009 - 2012 Proposed Basketball Program

The NSWIS Basketball Program is an integrated program that caters for able-bodied athletes and wheelchair basketballers.

The program provides world class coaching, training, facilities, and support services in order to create the optimal training environment for athletes across NSW. By supporting the daily training needs of athletes the program aims to improve athlete development.

With a competition focus on the World Championships and the Paralympic Games, the wheelchair basketball component of the program supports athletes competing at an international level, including 'transition' athletes competing at an U23 level internationally.

The basketball component provides support on a seasonal basis to athletes competing at an international level (including U23 athletes) as well as supporting athletes competing at a junior international level. The program aims to develop junior athletes and provide a pathway for 'graduation' into the AIS program.

The NSW Insitute of Sport is the only SIS/SAS to support a dedicated Wheelchair Basketball program.

Interesting fact:
Since 1996, athletes from the Wheelchair Basketball component of the Basketball Program have contributed six medals to Australia's Paralympic medal tally. These medals include gold (Men's team) and bronze (Women's) in 2008 in Beijing, two silver medals in 2004 (Men's and Women's team) in Athens, silver in 2000 (Women's team) in Sydney and gold in 1996 (Men's team) in Atlanta.
