The NSWIS Canoe Slalom Program aims to target elite and potential elite athletes aiming to fast track development by providing world class coaching, facilities, infrastructure and support services in an intensive daily training and camp-based environment at the Penrith Whitewater Stadium. The Slalom Canoe/Kayak National Centre of Excellence (NCE) Program is a joint venture between the NSWIS, the Australian Institute of Sport (AIS) and Australian Canoeing Inc.
The NSWIS Canoe Slalom Program targets athletes who are Olympic or World Championship medal winners and potential medal winners; Senior national team members and emerging team athletes (Team 22); or emerging senior athletes (Team 22) and top ranked junior national team members are targeted by the program. A maximum of 20 athletes can be accommodated within the Program, with athletes inducted in April annually.
The NSWIS Slalom Canoe program is a unique program working in partnership with the Australian Institute of Sport and Australian Canoeing to provide support and coaching for athletes to achieve international success. Two NSWIS athletes made their Olympic debut at the Beijing Olympics with Jacqui Lawrence winning a silver medal in the Women’s K1 and Lachlan Milne finishing ninth in the Men's C2. A large number of NSWIS Slalom Canoe athletes have always been engaged in tertiary education including Lachlan Milne who completed his Bachelor of Medicine at the University of Sydney between the Athens and Beijing Olympics.
