The NSWIS Canoe Sprint Program aims to maximise medal winning performances and sustainable international success. It has elite and emerging athlete components. It is a decentralised program delivered through NSW home based locations and the National Centre of Excellence (NCE) - Australian Institute of Sport (AIS) facility at Robina, Gold Coast. The NCE is a unique partnership between Australian Canoeing Inc, the Australian Institute of Sport and Queensland Academy of Sport.
The NSWIS Canoe Sprint Program targets athletes who are Olympic or World Championship medal winners and potential medal winners and senior national team members; nationally identified elite development athletes who have achieved national representation or have the potential to achieve national representation; or junior national team members.
The NSWIS Sprint Canoe Program continues to support athletes to train in their home environment and offers a range of coaching options to athletes to maximise performance. Athletes are renowned for their long term commitment to the sport with many NSWIS athletes representing Australia at multiple Olympics. NSWIS has contributed to four Olympic medals and three World Championship titles. The Elite & EAP Coordinating Coach, Guy Wilding, works with a network of coaches to support athletes and was the under-23 National coach for 2007 and 2008.
With a long history in Sprint Canoe, regional coach Ben Hutchings, who was NSWIS Head Coach from 1996 – 2000, also holds a national coaching role. The 2008 Beijing Olympics will see Hutchings attend his seventh Olympic Games as a national coach - his fifth with Australia (two were with New Zealand).
Another great contributor to athlete performance is a relatively ‘new’ coach, 1996 Olympian Jimmy Walker. Walker uses his own experience as an elite athlete in the surf and on flat-water to coach high performance and up and coming athletes from Sydney’s Southern beach area.
