The NSWIS Sailing Program aims to provide world class coaching, training facilities, support services and access to domestic competition for athletes. The focus of the program is to develop and improve athletes to achieve successful performances at World Championships and the Olympic Games.
The NSWIS Sailing Program targets athletes who are identified elite athletes in Olympic and Paralympic classes who are eligible for Australian Sailing Team or Australian Sailing Development Squad selection; and identified elite development athletes (including ISAF World Youth Championship athletes).
The NSWIS Sailing Program has been led by NSWIS Head Coach Erik Stibbe since 2005. Before coming to Australia, Stibbe was part of the Dutch sailing team that competed at the 1992 Olympic Games in Barcelona.
Under Stibbe’s guidance, the NSWIS Sailing Program has supported the national program and contributed to impressive Australian results. In June 2008, Australia was ranked number one in the World of sailing (four NSWIS athletes won World Championships) and 12 NSWIS sailors (of 17 nationally) were selected to compete at the 2008 Olympic Games. NSWIS athletes Nathan Wilmot and Malcolm Page brought home a gold medal from Beijng in the 470 class, while Darren Bundock won a silver in the Tornado class.
It appears that NSWIS will continue to contribute to senior international performances in the future with seven NSWIS athletes (of eight nationally) selected to the 2008 Australian Youth Team to compete at the ISAF World Youth Championships.
