Gold continues to Leek

15/09/2008

Peter Leek’s amazing form has continued at the Paralympic Games, guiding Australia’s 34 Points Men’s 4x100m Medley relay to a resounding gold medal. Competing in one of the last events at the Water Cube, Australia stepped up and smashed the World Record, finishing a time of 4.11:90, passing the old mark by more than 10 seconds.

Leek wasn’t the only NSWIS athlete to feature in the team, with Ben Austin and Rick Pendleton both putting in strong performances in the relay.

Austin was happy to come away with gold after having a meet that didn’t live up to his high expectations.

“I haven’t reached the expectations I wanted to. I didn’t want to put pressure on myself but I really wanted to help the team to gold tonight. I’m pretty happy now – it was a mixed Games for me but this result is a lot sweeter.’’ Austin said when speaking to the Paralympic Committee.

”It was such a tight field. I didn’t look at anyone else. I just tried to focus on the front end and really worked that last 25 (metres). That was pretty much the best swim of the meet for me,’’

Pendleton was over the moon picking up his second gold of the meet.

“It makes this experience a lot better, I wasn’t sure if we could do it again so to pull out a gold medal, I’m just as pleased as anything,’’ he said.

In other results from the pool on the last night, Sian Lucas finished eighth in the S10 Women’s 400m freestyle and Teigan Van Roosmalen finished eighth in the S13 Women’s 50m freestyle.
