Nathan Outteridge - Sailing
After making his debut Olympic appearance in 2008, Nathan Outteridge enjoyed a stellar year on the water in 2009. He claimed his second consecutive world championship victory in the 49er class, as well as three more gold medals across the globe. A versatile sailor, Outteridge also claimed silver medals at the 29er and moth world championships.
Iain Jensen - Sailing
A former junior world champion, Iain Jensen was always destined to live up to his prodigious talent on the senior stage. That destiny was fulfilled in 2009 when he claimed gold at the 49er world championships. Jensen teamed with fellow NSWIS athlete Nathan Outteridge for the world championships, and two other international victories, before teaming with Outteridge’s sister, Hayley, to take bronze at the 29er world championships in July.
Darren Bundock - Sailing
Darren Bundock cemented his place as a legend of sailing by winning his seventh tornado world championship. To couple Bundock’s amazing world championship feats are his two Olympic silver medals, won at the 2000 and 2008 Olympic Games, three formula 18 world championships and five tornado European championships.
Kurt Fearnley – Wheelchair Track & Road
Kurt Fearnley continued his impressive list of marathon victories by claiming wins in the Paris, London and Seoul marathons in 2009. It was Fearnley’s second Paris marathon win, third Seoul win and maiden triumph in London. Fearnley needed his trademark sprint to the line to take victory in London, edging out British arch-rival David Weir by 0.01 seconds.
Matthew Mitcham - Diving
The golden boy of Australian diving picked up where he left off in 2008 by winning four gold medals at the Australian diving championships, the first person to accomplish such a feat. Mitcham then tallied 10m platform silver medals at Doha and Madrid diving grand prix’s before notching a bronze medal in the 1m springboard at the 2009 world championships.
David Smith – Canoe Sprint
David Smith is leading Australia’s canoe sprint charge to the 2012 London Olympic Games. Three gold medals at the national championships led to a berth on the Australian touring squad, which was quickly followed by a world cup gold and qualification for the world championships in the men’s k2 1000m, where he eventually won a silver medal.
