Classic Sportswear Most Memorable Moment
Dani Samuels – Track & Field
At the 2009 IAAF Athletics World Championships, Dani Samuels stunned the crowd, and herself, to take gold in the women’s discus with a throw of 65.44m. Samuels’ throw was a new personal best by over two metres as she became the youngest ever female discus world champion. In winning gold, Samuels became one of only seven athletes to win gold at world youth, junior and senior level.
Megan Dunn – Cycling
Megan Dunn is officially the greatest junior cyclist in the history of the sport. Dunn claimed three gold medals at the 2008 junior world championships, and then matched that feat in 2009 for a total of six junior world crowns, the most of any male or female. With such talent at only 19 years of age, Dunn’s talent will be leading the way for Australia’s medal charge at the 2012 London Olympic Games.
Kaarle McCulloch – Cycling
Kaarle McCulloch’s most memorable moment came to fruition at the 2009 world championships when she held off a fast finishing British team to claim gold in the women’s team sprint. McCulloch teamed with Anna Meares for the race, but stole the show by holding strong on the final leg to finish in a world record time of 33.149 seconds.
Matthew Mitcham – Diving
Creating history is nothing new to Matthew Mitcham, and he continued on his amazing journey by becoming the first Australian diver to win four gold medals at a national championship. Mitcham won the 1m springboard, 3m springboard and 10m platform, repeating his three gold medals from 2008, and added the 3m synchronised springboard to his repertoire for another memorable victory.
Kurt Fearnley – Wheelchair Track & Road
It would seem there is not much Kurt Fearnley hasn’t achieved. However, heading into the 2009 London Marathon, Fearnley had never taken the title but was determined to make a change. Fearnley found himself against arch-rival David Weir coming down the home straight, but this time getting the better of the Brit by 0.01 seconds to take his maiden London win.
