OLYMPICS & PARALYMPICS

From our first medal at the 1996 Atlanta Olympic Games, to Marty Mayberry’s silver medal at the 2010 Winter Paralympic Games, NSWIS athletes have been at the forefront of Australia’s Olympic and Paralympic success.

Over 400 NSWIS athletes have represented Australia at Olympic level, and more than 50 NSWIS athletes have represented Australia at the Paralympic Games, contributing nearly 100 medals of all colours to the nation’s overall success.

NSWIS snowboarder Torah Bright won the Institute’s first Winter Olympic gold medal when she claimed gold in the women’s snowboard half-pipe at the 2010 Winter Games.

63 NSWIS athletes and 11 coaches participated in the Atlanta Olympic and Paralympic Games

At the Nagano Winter Paralympic Games, James Patterson won one gold medal and one bronze medal.

At the 2008 Beijing Olympic Games the NSWIS was well represented with 85 athletes selected on the Olympic team.

Ian Thorpe won his first Olympic medal at the Sydney 2000 Games in the 400m freestyle.
