Fox double sends warning to Olympic rivals

The NSW Institute of Sport’s Jessica Fox has sent out a warning to her Olympic rivals with an impressive double at the Under 23 Canoe Slalom World Championships in Krakow, Poland.

Fox, who won silver in the K1 at the London Olympics in 2012, won her third consecutive U/23 K1 title on Sunday, blitzing her rivals to win by more than three seconds.

24 hours earlier she also won her third U/23 non-Olympic C1 world title, also by more than three seconds.

Fox was thrilled with both her performances less than one month from the Rio Olympics.

“It was pretty solid, I’m really happy with that delivery,” she said.

“I’m really happy to win my tenth junior and U/23 world title today.”

Her double in Krakow follows on from a solid World Cups campaign in Europe, and has her feeling confident going into Rio.

“The World Cups were really good preparation for the Olympics, but this was different,” she said.

“It’s a Championship, there was more pressure, it’s a longer racing week. It’s closer to the Olympics, so that’s why I wanted to race.

“I know a lot of athletes will have had a month and a half without racing, so for me I think this was a good test and a good hit-out. I know the speed is there and the technique is there, so now it’s just about fine tuning.”

Fox was 3.11 seconds ahead of the Czech Republic’s Galuskova, with Germany’s Fritsche in third.

Fox will now head to Rio to finish off her preparation for the Olympics.

Her younger sister, Noemie, also an NSWIS athlete, unfortunately attracted a 50-second penalty for missing a gate and finished 10th in the K1 final.

But in a good sign for the future, Noemie also made the final of the C1 on Saturday, finishing seventh.
