Alexandra Hulley won the silver medal in the women’s hammer at the 2018 Commonwealth Games on the Gold Coast and finished sixth in the same event at the Birmingham 2022 Commonwealth Games.
“To be selected in this team means more than any other selection I’ve had. It’s very special. This time last year I would have never thought I’d be gaining selection into the team this week.”
Growing up in Northmead, Alex was first introduced to throwing events at her Year 7 school athletics carnival at Our Lady of Mercy College in North Parramatta. She was approached by her now coach, Breanne Clement, to try throwing the hammer. Alex had no idea what the hammer was, gave it a go and loved it.
Alex credits her schools, in particular her high school, with her success.
“My high school in particular was extremely supportive of my athletics goals as well as academic goals and helped me to succeed in both of those. When I needed time off during the school term to travel to nationals or the world u18 championships and the Youth Olympic Games, they supported me by putting learning plans in place and this instilled confidence in me that they believed in me and were there to support me. This definitely helped me succeed and continue on from a junior athlete to a senior athlete.”
