James Matheson is an Australian freestyle skier that competes in mogul skiing. He was selected for second Australian Olympic team for the Beijing 2022 Winter Games.
Born in Buenos Aires, James’ family eventually settled in Sydney, and in 2004 he took up freestyle skiing, training with Perisher Winter Sports Club. At just 15, James made his international debut competing on the 2010 Europa Cup Tour. He went on to qualify for his world cup event in Deer Valley in 2013.
While competing on the Nor-Am cup tour, James claimed a bronze medal at the Val St.Come event in Quebec in February 2016, earning him qualification to his first full World Cup tour for the 2016/17 season. The freestyle skier debuted at the World Ski Championships in 2017 in Spain where he placed 29th in the moguls and dual moguls.
The following year James competed at his first Olympic Games in PyeongChang where he recorded his best score of 73.96 in final one to finish 14th overall.
In the 2018/2019 World Cup season, James made his first-ever super final in Thaiwoo, China, placing sixth before going on to compete at his third world championships.
The highlight of James’ 2020/2021 season was qualifying for finals in fifth place in Idre Fjall, Sweden, where he finished up in 16th. His season’s best result coming in the dual moguls finishing in 25th place.
At the Beijing 2022 Olympic Winter Games, James finished in 14th place in the men’s moguls.
