NSWIS scholarship holders Brittany O’Brien and Esther Qin have missed the medals in the women’s synchronised 3m springboard final at the Sandwell Aquatics Centre.
The five pair final included fellow Aussies Maddison Keeney and Annabelle Smith who impressed the field and went on to claim Australia’s first diving gold medal at Birmingham 2022 Commonwealth Games.
Brittany and Esther sat in third position following the first round of dives, but narrowly slipped out of medal contention in the subsequent rounds.
Earlier in the week, Brittany surged her way into the silver medal of the women’s 1m springboard, after spending the previous 12 months considering retiring from the sport.
Esther, a dual Olympian, four-time Commonwealth Games medallist, and a world championship bronze medallist and Brittany competing in her second Commonwealth Games gave it their all in a tightly contested final.
Earlier in the evening, fellow NSWIS athlete Sam Fricker successfully qualified for the men’s 3m springboard final, finishing in 10th place in the preliminary round.
Coached by NSWIS’ National Head Diving Coach, Chava Sobrino, Sam competed alongside fellow Aussie Shixin Li who he partnered with earlier in the week to win bronze in the 3m synchronised springboard final.
The men’s 3m springboard final will be contested at 3:05am Sunday morning AEST, while Melissa Wu will compete in the women’s synchronised 10m platform final at 4:34am.
