The Tokyo 2020 Paralympics Triathlon events got under way with NSW Institute of Sport (NSWIS) athlete Jonathan Goerlach competing in the men’s PTVI event.
Goerlach, making his Paralympic debut with guide David Mainwaring, recorded one of the fastest runs following the final transition but was unable to reel the leaders.
Having started in the last pack of athletes a little over three minutes behind the first competitors, Goerlach picked up a place in both the 20k bike ride and 5k run to finish in 8th place.
American Brad Snyder won the event, finishing just over a minute ahead of the 2nd place Spanish athlete Hector Catala Laparra. Remarkably this was the Americans 6th Paralympic gold medal having transitioned from swimming to triathlon for the Tokyo Games.
