The Australian Women’s Softball Team have notched their first win of the Tokyo 2020 Olympics with a tight 1-0 win over Italy at the Fukushima Azuma Stadium.
Leaving the disappointing day 1 result against Japan behind them, the Aussie Spirit showed great composure and discipline in keeping their opponents scoreless for the entire match.
It was a single hit from Jade Wall in the second innings that allowed Taylah Tsitsikronis to make it home, the NSWIS-supported duo combining for the match’s sole run.
Meanwhile, the Institute’s pitcher Kaia Parnaby was in fine form, limiting opportunities for the Italian side throughout the match, with NSWIS teammate Ellen Roberts finishing the job for Australia in the seventh in a tense finish to the innings.
The Spirit will now enjoy a day off before taking on Canada on Saturday, with their medal hopes still well and truly alive.
