Tim Brand was Australia’s leading goal scorer at his debut Olympic Games, helping the Kookaburras claim a silver medal.

One of seven Team NSWIS athletes selected to represent the Australian men’s hockey team, the Kookaburra’s, Tim was among Australia’s opening match scorers of the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games.

Playing a central role in the team’s silver medal success, Tim scored the winning penalty during an intense quarter-final shoot-out against the defending Olympic championship team – The Netherlands, and advanced the Kookas through to the semi-final.

Leaving his debut Olympic Games, Tim came away as the teams leading goal scorer at just age 23 earning him the honours at the 2021 NSWIS Awards, of Southern Design Junior Athlete of the Year.

While Tim was unable to attend the Awards due to his playing commitments in Europe, Kookaburra’s teammate and roommate, Tom Craig was more than happy to accept the Award on his behalf.

“For me, it was a massive year. I went to my first Olympic Games which was a very special experience and to come away with the silver medal with the whole team… that’s something that’s going to stay with me for the rest of my life” Tim said in his acceptance speech.

Tim thanked the whole Kookaburra’s family- his teammates, his coaches and the Institute for his support. He thanked Brent Livermore, the head coach of the NSWIS Hockey program,

“You have played a massive role in where I have come today, thank you” he said.

Tom was today announced, alongside the awards winner, as reselected into the 2022 Kookaburra’s squad. Both teammates enjoying the European season before they re-connect with the squad in the near future.
