Fearnley second in New York

NSWIS athlete Kurt Fearnley finished second at the 2011 New York Marathon overnight, taking silver in the men’s wheelchair division after overcoming a mechanical issue.

Fearnley’s steering mechanism snapped halfway through the gruelling 42km course, disrupting the four time champion’s rhythm, speed and steering for the rest of the race, which was eventually won by Japan’s Soejima Masazumi.

The silver medal adds to the gold medals Fearnley won at the 2011 IPC World Championships and Sydney Marathon, and he will now turn to his focus to the 2012 London Paralympic Games where he will aim for a third straight wheelchair marathon gold.

Fellow NSWIS athlete Christie Dawes finished fifth in the women’s division, clocking a time of 1:52:5.
