The Hockeyroos have been beaten 1-0 by India at the quarter-final stage of the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games, after heroics from India’s goal keeper Savita.

Going into the quarter finals, the Hockeyroos were in great form having topped their qualification pool. Both teams started the match with great energy and drive and it took until the second quarter for the deadlock to be broken when India scored from a penalty corner.

The Hockeyroos team including six NSW Institute of Sport (NSWIS) graduate athletes: Emily Chalker, Greta Hayes, Kate Jenner, Kaitlin Nobbs, Grace Stewart and Mariah Williams under the leadership of former NSWIS head coach Katrina Powell strived for an equalizer.

During the match the Hockeyroos amassed 14 attempts on goal compared with India’s five, the Indian team defended valiantly throughout the game and with Savita at the back playing the game of her life the Hockeyroos couldn’t find that elusive equalizer.

The Hockeyroos leave their Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games campaign at the quarter final stage, but for India and their women’s team they reach an Olympic Games semi final for the first time in their countries history.  In that semi final India will play Argentina after the beat Germany 3-0 in the other linked quarter-final match.
