Reigning Olympic champion Matthew Mitcham has returned to the winner’s circle at the 2011 Australian Diving Championships, clinching the men’s 10m platform title.
The NSWIS athlete showed no visible signs of the abdominal injury that has disrupted his year, including forcing him out of this year’s world championships. Mitcham scored a solid 480.05 to win by nearly 50 points from his nearest competitor.
Fellow NSWIS athletes Melissa Wu and Alexandra Croak also performed solidly during the championships; collectively they claimed gold in the women’s 10m synchronised platform, with Wu winning individual bronze in the women’s 10m platform, while Scott Robertson won bronze in the men’s 1m springboard.
The championships were a precursor to the upcoming Olympic trials, which take place in April 2012.
