Mixed fortunes for Australia

The Australian Kookaburras and Hockeyroos have experienced mixed fortunes at the 2011 Oceania Cup, with both sides looking to improve ahead of next year’s Olympic Games.
After beginning the tournament with a 0-3 loss to New Zealand, the Kookaburras bounced back with a 3-3 draw but still found themselves needing to win their third match by more than three goals to claim the cup. The final match was a welcome return to form as Australia thrashed the Kiwis 6-1, with NSWIS athletes Simon Orchard and Kieran Govers each scoring a goal.
Needing only a draw to claim the cup for Australia, the Hockeyroos went down 2-4 to New Zealand in a tight tussle to see the trophy slip away on a countback. Scores were level at half-time before the Kiwis went ahead, with Australia’s young side unable to find the back of the opposition’s net.
