The program has produced multiple selections onto Olympic and senior national teams and demonstrates a strong culture despite its niche orientation and small participation numbers.
Performance Operations Manager, Sara Latham proudly accepted the award on behalf of the program.
Responsible for managing the daily training environments and for accompanying overseas tours, Sara explained the Canoe Slalom team is an incredible group of people to work with.
“Our coaches are incredible. We lead a high performance driven program and we’ve had some incredible successes over the last quad” she said, “and we’re certainly looking forward to the next one going into Paris”.
An incredibly successful year headlined by the performances of Olympic Gold and bronze medallist Jessica Fox, Sara says it was a really special year, especially for females of the sport,
“Australia has always pushed to get the gender equality in canoe slalom at the Olympic Games. It’s been driven by the Australian Slalom team for many, many years now, so it was extra special when we got it into the Games… and then to win, it was just incredible”.
The greatest excitement for the program though is the next cycle – full of opportunity and off the back of such a successful 12 months, which Sara says will have really inspired the next generation of athletes.
The next cycle promising the extreme event at the Paris 2024 Games.
“We’re really excited. Obviously not long to go and with the extra Olympic discipline of extreme slalom, we have a lot to get on with” Sara said.
Congratulations to everyone involved in the program.
