Following an independent review into the culture and practices of gymnastics in Australia, the Australian Human Rights Commission has published their findings. Gymnastics Australia commissioned the independent review in August 2020 in response to reports from the gymnastics community of unacceptable personal experiences.
A copy of the report can be found on the Gymnastics Australia website.
The report identifies systemic issues that affect athlete experience and wellbeing at all levels of the sport, and it is deeply concerning.
The NSW Institute of Sport (NSWIS) is unaware of any issues or complaints raised in relation to the Institute’s gymnastics programs that ran from 1996 to 2003.
The health, safety and wellbeing of our athletes is our highest priority, and NSWIS is committed to being part of the solution. We will continue to work with Sport Integrity Australia, Gymnastics Australia, and national system partners to address the recommendations within the report.
The Institute endorses the AIS BE Heard support service and encourages any past or present athletes to utilise the independent, free, and confidential support if, and when, they require it.
NSWIS has appropriate policies, guidelines, and reporting processes in place to ensure a safe sporting environment and protect our athletes.
