NSWIS Women’s Hockey Head Coach Katrina Powell has been named the Head Coach of the Hockeyroos. Her appointment will see her lead the team on a permanent basis through to the Paris 2024 Olympics.

In her appointment, Katrina becomes the first female Hockeyroos Head Coach since Colleen Quinn, in 1978, to hold the position. Her full-time appointment coming off the back of her interim work in the role from March 2021, which saw her lead the team through their Tokyo Olympic Campaign.

The dual Olympic gold medallist herself, coached the team through all five wins of their group stage matches before facing a loss to India in the quarter final at Tokyo.

Ross Sudano, who chaired the selection panel, alongside a number of reputable, independent panellists, said, “Hockey Australia was impressed with the strength of the Australian and internationally-based candidates who contested for the respected Hockeyroos head coach role.”

“Katrina was appointed on the back of her ability and an assessment of her skillset. She is strongly passionate and connected to achieve success with the Hockeyroos… She has demonstrated an ability to build trust within a high performance environment and has the personal merits and accolades to develop that respect.”

“Katrina projected a compelling vision for the Hockeyroos and Australian women’s hockey,” Sudano said.

The newly appointed Hockeyroos head coach has held various coaching roles since 2005 following a decorated playing career (inclusive of 252 games and 141 goals for the Hockeyroos), and has been in her role with NSWIS since 2013.

In her appointment to the role for the Tokyo campaign, NSWIS CEO Kevin Thompson had commended Katrina,

“Katrina has proven herself to be a world-class coach and we are thrilled to see her leading the Hockeyroos on the world’s biggest stage,” he said.

“It’s fantastic to see a female coach leading the team for the first time in 40 years and we wish Katrina, the Hockeyroos and Hockey Australia every success in Tokyo and beyond.”

NSWIS is now pleased to see that commitment extended and looks forward to continuing to work with Katrina and the Hockey Australia team to provide on-going leading national development training environments, world class coaching and services to hockey players.

Katrina’s major upcoming assignments as head coach will include next year’s world cup and the Commonwealth Games. The NSW Institute of Sport congratulates Katrina on the appointment and wishes her all the best in her transition into the new role.
