The Kookaburras survived a New Zealand comeback to register a 2-1 opening round win in the men’s hockey competition.

The gold medal favourites shot to a 2-nil halftime lead with NSWIS star Blake Govers playing a part in Chris Ciriello’s opener eight minutes in.

It was a dominant first-half from the Kookaburras with the Black Sticks having few answers to the onslaught from the world champions.

But they provided stubborn resistance after the break and pegged back the deficit immediately after halftime.

Govers, together with fellow NSWIS athletes Matthew Dawson and Simon Orchard will be back in action tomorrow when the Kookaburras take on Spain.
