Australia’s men’s water polo team’s bid to win a maiden Olympic medal suffered a setback at the first hurdle with an 8-7 lost to Games host Brazil.
The home team was never headed in a gripping duel that saw every Australian inroad countered by an answer from Brazil on the scoreboard.
A fleet of NSWIS athletes donned the Australian cap and they found themselves behind 2-nil early in the piece.
The Sharks continued to stay in touch though and doubles from John Cotterill and Richie Campbell raised hopes of an equalizer in the final minute of regular time.
It wasn’t to be, adding to the importance of tomorrow night’s second game against the powerful Hungary line-up.
