New South Wales Institute of Sport scholarship athletes played a crucial role  in helping Team Australia light up Glasgow by contributing to 31 of its 171 Commonwealth Games medals – including 70 gold – that the men and women dressed in green and gold brought home.

“With three laps to go, I was close, so I thought, ‘You know, you can do it.’ I backed myself in the whole race.”

Besides their collective haul of 17 gold, 11 silver and three bronze medals, 17 NSWIS athletes completed top 10 finishes, while a series of wonderful personal milestones included:

  • Georgia Godwin becoming Australia’s most successful women’s gymnast in the Commonwealth Games after helping the women’s Artistic Team claim gold.
  • Sienna Toohey completing the medal set in the women’s 4x100m Medley Relay (gold), 50m Breaststroke (silver), and 100m Breaststroke (bronze) – on debut – at 17 years old.
  • Rose Davies becoming the first woman in Games history to win the 5000m and 10,000m, achieving season best times in both events.
  • Eleanor Patterson claiming gold in the women’s High Jump. Besides setting a new Commonwealth Games record of 1.96m, the victory represented a full circle moment for Patterson as she repeated her 2014 Glasgow Games victory.
  • Tim Hodge defending his Commonwealth title in the men’s 100m Butterfly S9.
  • Daniel Bos (NSWIS Para Unit) setting a new Oceania record of 147kg in the men’s Para Powerlifting Lightweight.
  • Joshua Azzopardi, Chris Ius (heat runner)and Rohan Browning playing their part in ensuring the Aussie 4 x 100m men’s relay not only upstaged Paris Olympic champions Canada, but they became the first Australian men’s 100m relay team to win Commonwealth Games gold since 1974.

Nicola [Olyslagers] is a phenomenal athlete and a phenomenal human who has definitely got the better of me over the last few years.”

“I’ve been lucky enough to compete at two Commonwealth Games already, and I’ve watched the Team come into the stadium both times and felt so much pride watching the green and gold walking in. To now have that role myself, to have it happen in Glasgow of all places, the same city where I made my international debut, means the Games already feel special . . .

Other NSWIS facts to emerge from 10 memorable days of competition included:

  • 43 NSWIS -supported athletes selected for Team Australia
  • 25 made their Commonwealth Games debut
  • Six athletes – Tim Hodge OAM, Nicola Olyslagers, Georgia Godwin, Jasmine Greenwood, Eleanor Patterson and Rohan Browning – competed in their third Commonwealth Games
  • 14 year old Mia Hogan, from Albury, was the youngest competitor
