Olympic debutant Riley Fitzsimmons will paddle for Olympic gold this evening in the K4 1000m final.

After a long wait to compete at these Games, the NSWIS athlete finally hit the water and enjoyed a memorable day on the picturesque course.

The Australians finished third behind Germany and Slovakia in their morning heat and were forced to contest the semi-finals.

In a see-sawing battle with Portugal, the Australians led the race, were behind at the halfway stage and then fought back to win in a photo finish.

Australia is looking to defend its gold medal won at the London Olympics.

Fitzsimmons, Jordan Wood and Ken Wallace have been added to the crew, with Jacob Clear the lone survivor from the team which won gold four years ago.

The K4 1000m final is on tonight at 11:12pm AEST.
