Eleanor Patterson has broken the long-held Australian high jump record in stunning fashion.

The Rio Olympian cleared a height of 1.99m at the Capital Classic in Wellington, New Zealand, to break the national women’s high jump record that has not been bested since 1989.

The previous record was 1.98m set by Vanessa Ward and later equalled by Alison Inverarity.

Patterson recently began training with experienced high jump coach Alex Stewart, who also trains Commonwealth Games champion Brandon Starc.

Nicola McDermott also competed at the event and jumped another Olympic Games qualifier performance of 1.96m, narrowly missing her own attempt at the Australian record.
