Australia has dominated the opening night of the 2011 Para Pan Pacific Championships with a number of NSWIS athletes chiming in to claim medals in Canada.

Matthew Levy was the standout performer of the NSWIS contingent, winning gold in the men’s S7 50m butterfly, clocking a time of 32.41 seconds en route to opening the Australian men’s gold medal account. Levy’s fellow NSWIS athlete Andrew Pasterfield secured bronze in the men’s S10 100m butterfly in a time of 59.29.

The women’s events saw Jacqui Freney pick up two silver medals. Freney began her campaign strongly with silver in the women’s S8 400m freestyle, before going on to win another silver in the women’s S8 50m freestyle.

The 2011 Para Pan Pacific Championships take place in Edmonton, Canada from 10-14 August 2011.
