Australian Athletics Championships return to Sydney in 2027

The Australian Athletics Championships will return to Sydney for a second consecutive year, with the nation’s premier domestic athletics meet set to take place from 1–4 April 2027 at the Sydney Olympic Park Athletic Centre in Homebush.

With qualification and selection opportunities for the World Athletics Championships in Beijing, China, in September 2027, and the World Para Athletics Championships in Tashkent, Uzbekistan, in June 2027, the Championships are expected to attract Australia’s leading athletes as they target national titles and international selection.

The 2026 Championships proved a major success, marking the first major athletics meet on the venue’s freshly resurfaced track and delivering four days of memorable performances.

Among the highlights were Gout Gout’s world U20 record in the 200m, Lachlan Kennedy breaking the 10-second barrier in the 100m, New South Wales Institute of Sport’s (NSWIS) Jessica Hull’s memorable victory in the 5000m, Nina Kennedy’s return to the top of the podium in the pole vault following an extended period on the sidelines with injury, and para athlete Angus Hincksman’s 1500m T38 world record.

The Championships also delivered significant engagement and community impact, including:

• 10,882 total attendees across four days
• 3.06 million broadcast reach
• Eight dedicated athletics community development sessions

The return of the Championships to Sydney has been made possible with the support of the New South Wales Government and the Office of Sport, whose ongoing partnership is critical to delivering the event.

“After a fantastic 2026 event, we can’t wait to welcome back athletes to the iconic Sydney Olympic Park Athletics Centre for the 2027 Australian Athletics Championships.”

“Sydney athletics fans can look forward to witnessing Australia’s best athletes like Gout Gout, Jessica Hull and Nicola Olyslagers striving to set new records and win national titles.”

Australian Athletics CEO Simon Hollingsworth said it was great to be back in Sydney for what is one of the highlights on the Australian athletics calendar.

“We are delighted to be back in Sydney for the second year in a row for the Australian Athletics Championships,” he said.

“This year was such a thrilling few days of athletics, and with the World Athletics Championships and the Para Athletics Championships taking place next year, the stakes are going to be high again for our athletes.

“The new track at the Sydney Olympic Park Athletic Centre was so well received by our athletes and there were some remarkable performances, and I expect the same next year.

“We thank the New South Wales Government and the Office of Sport for their continued support to make this event happen.”

With international selection on the line and Australia’s leading athletes expected to converge on Sydney, the 2027 Australian Athletics Championships promises another four days of world class competition at Sydney Olympic Park.
