Birtwhistle takes to triathlon podium

NSWIS triathlete Jake Birtwhistle has claimed a podium finish in the Super League Triathlon on Hamilton Island.

The new format sees athletes compete over three days in five race formats, the ‘Eliminator’, ‘Enduro’, ‘Equalizer’, ‘Sprint Pursuit’ and ‘Triple Mix’ for over USD $1m.

Birtwhistle calmly navigated the first two days of racing before saving his best for day three, going with the breakaway before unleashing on the sprint finish to win the Eliminator on day three.

The win was enough to lift Birtwhistle to 48 points and claim third overall in the Hamilton Island series.

Fellow NSWIS athlete Ryan Bailie finished sixth.
