NSWIS track & field star Ryan Gregson began his campaign for a spot at the 2011 IAAF Athletics World Championships with a dazzling win in the men’s 1500m at the Eugene Diamond League meet over the week.

Gregson clocked a world leading time of 3:53.86 in the men’s mile to win gold ahead of Americans David Torrence and Ben Blankenship in his first individual race of the season. Gregson is aiming at selection in the men’s 1500m for the world championships later this year in Korea.

Other NSWIS results from the Diamond League included Fabrice Lapierre’s fifth place in the men’s long jump, Lachlan Renshaw finishing sixth in the men’s 800m, Youcef Abdi finishing 10th in the men’s 3000m steeplechase and Eloise Wellings finishing 13th in the women’s 5000m.

Elsewhere, NSWIS athlete Kevin Moore took advantage of the rare opportunity to represent Malta, the birthplace of his father, at the 2011 Games of the Small European States. Moore competed in the men’s 400m, taking gold by nearly one second in a time of 47.68 seconds.

Moore was able to represent Malta under IAAF guidelines, however as of November the guidelines are scheduled to be changed, prohibiting dual representation.
