The Hockeyroos have begun their London campaign in winning fashion, defeating Germany 2-0, while the Kookaburras suffered a heartbreaking 2-1 loss to Argentina in a tightly contested encounter.

Hockeyroos Defeat Germany Behind Bartram Clean Sheet

The Hockeyroos produced a composed performance against Germany, claiming a 2-0 victory thanks to second-quarter goals from Steph Kershaw and Alice Arnott (New South Wales Institute of Sport/NSWIS), while goalkeeper Jocelyn Bartram (NSWIS) starred with a player-of-the-match display.

A tight opening quarter saw both teams struggle to create clear scoring opportunities, with neither side able to break the deadlock.

Australia found the breakthrough midway through the second quarter when a well-worked penalty corner variation ended with Kershaw applying the finishing touch to put the Hockeyroos ahead.

The Hockeyroos doubled their advantage late in the half after Amy Lawton’s dangerous ball into the circle found the foot of a German defender, earning Australia another penalty corner.

From the resulting penalty corner, Claire Colwill delivered a clever pass from the baseline to Arnott, who roofed the ball to give Australia a 2-0 lead heading into halftime.

Despite sustained pressure from Germany after the break, Bartram stood tall in goal, turning away every opportunity that came her way to preserve a clean sheet and secure Australia’s first victory in London.

Final Score: Australia 2, Germany 0

Australia Goals:

  • Steph Kershaw (20th minute)
  • Alice Arnott (26th minute)

Kookaburras fall to Argentina in tightly contested contest

The Kookaburras were unable to hold off a late Argentine surge, falling 2-1 despite taking a first-half lead through Ky Willott (NSWIS).

An arm wrestle of an opening quarter saw neither side trouble the scorers, with both defences standing firm.

The deadlock was finally broken late in the second quarter when a turnover inside Australia’s attacking circle saw Willott pounce, firing home with less than two minutes remaining before halftime to give the Kookaburras a 1-0 lead.

Australia carried that advantage into the main break, but Argentina responded after halftime through Tomas Domene, whose low penalty corner flick beat goalkeeper Jed Snowden to level the scores.

The Kookaburras generated plenty of attacking pressure throughout the fourth quarter, but Argentina’s defence repeatedly stood up in crucial moments to deny Australia a second goal.

With just over three minutes remaining, Argentina earned a penalty corner following a challenge inside the circle. Australia referred the decision, but the original call stood after video review.

Domene then stepped up and converted his second drag flick of the match, finding the bottom corner to put Argentina ahead 2-1.

Australia removed Snowden in the closing stages in search of an equaliser, but Argentina held firm to secure victory.

Final Score: Argentina 2, Australia 1
