The captivating campaigns of the Australian women’s football team, the Matildas, and the men’s under-19 basketball team, the Emus, have come to an end in the quarter final stage of their respective tournaments.

The Matildas, featuring seven NSWIS athletes, were unable to overcome Scandinavian giants Sweden, losing 1-3 to bow out of the 2011 FIFA Women’s World Cup. NSWIS athlete Ellyse Perry scored on the stroke of half-time to head into the break down 1-2, however a quick goal after half-time sealed the result for the Matildas.

Selected on the team were NSWIS athletes Perry, Leena Khamis, Heather Garriock, Teigen Allen, Caitlin Foord, Servet Uzunlar and Kyah Simon.

Elsewhere, the Australian Emus finished sixth at the 2011 FIBA U19 World Championships in Latvia. The Emus, led by NSWIS coach Damian Cotter, lost to eventual runners-up Serbia in the quarter final stage, before going down in a nailbiter against the USA, 77-78. NSWIS athlete Daniel Trist finished with nine points and six rebounds.
