The Australian women’s soccer team, the Matildas, have resurrected their 2011 FIFA Women’s World Cup campaign after a 3-2 victory over little known Equatorial Guinea.

The Matildas went ahead in the eighth minute thanks to NSWIS athlete Leena Khamis, however the African nation equalised shortly after. Australian then scored in the 48th and 51st minute of regulation time to lead 3-1 before Equatorial Guinea grabbed a consolation goal late in the match.

Australian will next play Norway on 6 July in Leverkusen, needing only a draw to progress through to the second stage of the competition.

Selected on the team are NSWIS athletes Khamis, Ellyse Perry, Heather Garriock, Teigen Allen, Caitlin Foord, Servet Uzunlar and Kyah Simon.
