The Hockeyroos have registered the first points of their Rio Olympics campaign with a thumping 6-1 win over India.

NSWIS stars Casey Sablowski, Emily Smith, Georgina Morgan, Grace Stewart and Mariah Williams were in all in action in what was a must-win clash for the Australians.

It followed back-to-back losses in their opening two games of the tournament.

Morgan featured heavily in the contest and stamped her class in the opening minutes.

Her penalty corner flick was deflected onto the goalkeeper’s pads and led to the opening goal.

She put her own name on the score sheet when a penalty corner drag flick found the back of the net in the ninth minute to double Australia’s advantage.

The Hockeyroos went 6-nil up before India scored in the final minute. It puts Australia’s campaign back on track as they eye off a spot in the quarter-finals.

“One of the things I said before we came here was I want to show the Aussie public how we can play and the brand of hockey we can play,” Australian coach Adam Commens told the AOC website.

“We’re one of the best teams in the world and I think we saw today how we move it, the speed that we play with through the midfield. We had our penalty corners working.

“Jodie Kenny and Georgie Morgan are two of the best drag flickers in the world. There’s not many girls that flick it harder than them.”

Australia will be looking to consolidate that performance when they take on the highly-ranked London Games silver medallists Argentina tomorrow morning (AEST).
