The first Australian representative netball team to compete at the inaugural Super Club event – taking place in New Zealand later this week – will be provided by Netball NSW in partnership with the NSW Institute of Sport.

The Super Club event is an international competition which will feature eight club teams from all over the world, taking place in Nelson from 2-7 July.

The team will be coached by NSWIS Head Netball Coach Briony Akle, who will come up against  the top three finishing teams from NZ’s ANZ Premiership,  South Africa’s Gauteng Jaguars, Fiji’s Marama Vou, the University of Trinidad & Tobago and the Celtic Flames from Wales.

Akle selected the team with the help of Netball NSW Coaches Julie Fitzgerald (GIANTS Netball) and Rob Wright (NSW Swifts) and has included up and coming talent to take on some of the world’s best.

“The team selection focused on creating opportunities for our young elite athletes from various stages of their netball pathway,” Akle said.

“The team reflects this, with athletes selected from elite Suncorp Super Netball teams, the Australian National League and NSWIS program.”

Fitzgerald and Wright will also be accompanying the team to New Zealand, working alongside Akle and the players in a mentoring and coaching capacity.

“It’s a great opportunity for not only myself to learn from them, but all the girls to learn from these experienced coaches who have experience at the international level,” Akle added.

The Head Coach expects a strong performance from her team and is looking forward to the players getting to know one another on the trip.

“They’re the type of athletes who will come together and be able to perform with very limited preparation together as a unit,, that’s why we selected them in the first place,” she said.

“For some of these players it will be their debut into international competition. It’s a great opportunity for the athletes to learn about competition at this level, event travel, the playing style of the opposition and working alongside the likes of Rob and Julie.”

The team will play their first game in the competition against the University of Trinidad & Tobago on Sunday 2 July at Trafalgar Centre in Nelson, New Zealand.
