Thirteen of the NSW Institute of Sport’s up and coming sprint paddlers have played a significant role in Australia successfully defending the Asia Pacific Cup at Lake Karapiro in Cambridge, New Zealand.

NSWIS athletes made up more than a third of the 34-strong team that won a total of 30 gold, 26 silver and 17 bronze medals to top the medal tally ahead of New Zealand and Japan.

Among the multitude of Institute medallists was under 18 paddler Kailey Harlen, who was able to continue her outstanding season by taking gold in the women’s K1 200, K1 500, K2 500, U21 K4 500 (along with NSWIS’ Jemma Smith) and in the mixed U18 K4 relay (also including Alisa van der Kwartel and Eli Newton of NSWIS).

The Cup is a regatta for junior and developing canoe sprint athletes across the under 16, 18 and 21 age groups, providing international experience to some of Australia’s future Olympians ahead of the upcoming Junior and Under 23 World Championships.
