Scott Law has won the final stage of the 2016 Australian Paper Tour of Gippsland, with Subaru NSWIS & MS teammate Cameron Scott placing second, Liam Magennis finishing fifth during the stage five criterium in Traralgon, Victoria.

The race is the sixth event Cycling Australia’s Subaru National Road Race Series, which commenced for the men in April with the Mersey Valley Tour in Tasmania. The series will conclude with the National Capital Tour in the ACT, which begins in 11 days on September 16.

While Law is a multiple national champion on the track, on the road the result in Traralgon marked the first time he has won more than one stage during the same event. His first win in the Australian Paper Tour of Gippsland coming in stage one.

Elated with the result, Law said that he knew he could win the final once he entered the final few hundred metres.

“I’m absolutely ecstatic, the Subaru boys rode really well today. We had a few cards to play out there on the road which was good,” said Law.

“We all rode really well and got together towards the end and came away with a great victory. We couldn’t be happier!

“Two stage wins in a tour, I don’t think I’ve ever done that before, so I’m really stoked with that and it’s definitely up there with one of my highest achievements on the bike.

“I knew if you were first into the roundabout at the end you pretty much had the stage win pretty much sewn up, so I used the momentum from the hill and pushed as hard as I could to get a gap before the roundabout.

“I kicked with about 150m to go and was able to cross the line with my hands in the air.”

Overall victory belonged to Avanti IsoWhey Sports’ Joe Cooper, with teammates Patrick Shaw and Patrick Lane rounding out the General Classification podium.

Liam Magennis was the highest placed Subaru NSWIS & MS rider in the final standings in 11th place.

The next round will be held from this Saturday, September 10, with the Amy’s Otway Tour on Victoria’s Great Ocean Road.
