The Australian men’s water polo team, the Sharks, have secured a top 10 finish at the 2011 FINA Aquatic World Championships after a comfortable 15-9 win over Japan yesterday.

It was a first quarter goal fest with the Sharks heading into quarter time up 6-4 before a 1-1 second quarter and 3-1 third quarter to lead 10-6 at the last change. A final quarter flurry of five goals saw the Sharks cruise to victory and a showdown with Canada in their final match of the tournament on Thursday.

NSWIS athlete Richie Campbell scored two goals for the Sharks, with fellow NSWIS atheltes Gavin Woods and Mitch Baird each adding a goal apiece.

Today’s action in Shanghai will see the Australian Stingers take on the Netherlands in the fifth to eighth place classification matches. If the Stingers, featuring four NSWIS atheltes, win, they will play either the USA or Canada for fifth spot.

Two NSWIS swimmers are in action today. James Magnussen lines up in the heats of the men’s 100m freestyle, aiming to make it through tonight’s semi final, and Kenneth To will do the same in the men’s 200m individual medley.
