Tom Slingsby has secured a silver medal in the men’s laser at the 2011 ISAF Sailing World Cup in Spain to conclude a mixed regatta for NSWIS sailors.

Slingsby led the fleet into the final race of the regatta but was unable to seal the victory, eventually finishing fifth in the medal race to secure silver overall. Reigning Olympic champion Paul Goodison won gold, while Slingsby’s fellow NSWIS athlete Tom Burton finished 28th.

Malcolm Page and his skipper Mathew Belcher were also in the mix on the final day of action, but could only manage seventh in the men’s 470. The pair finished seventh in the medal race and will now focus on the 2011 470 Spring Cup before the next round of the world cup. The 470 was also contested by NSWIS athlete Will Ryan and his skipper Sam Kivell, with the pair finishing 16th.

There were six NSWIS athletes taking part in the women’s match racing, but both teams were unable to mount a serious charge for gold. Nicky Souter, Nina Curtis and Olivia Price finished 10th, while Katie Spithill, Jessica Eastwell and Lucinda Whitty placed 14th.
