The Australian women’s water polo team, the Stingers, have notched the most impressive win of their campaign at the 2011 FINA Aquatic World Championships with a 27-2 thrashing of Uzbekistan on day five.

A tight first quarter saw the Stingers up 3-1 before the floodgates opened, allowing only one more goal from Uzbekistan as they piled on another 24, including nine unanswered in both the second and fourth quarters.

NSWIS athlete Rebecca Rippon scored three goals, Holly Lincoln-Smith and Nicola Zagame scored two apiece and Alicia McCormack was solid in goals. The Stingers now play Hungary for a spot in the quarter finals.

Also on day five, NSWIS diver Alexandra Croak finished seventh in the women’s 10m platform. Croak was ranked fifth after two dives, but misfired on her third dive to move back into seventh place where she eventually finished.

In action day six will be five NSWIS athletes as part of the Australian men’s water polo team, the Sharks, as they take on Serbia.
