The Australian Stingers are set to take on arch rivals the USA for fifth place in the women’s water polo at the 2011 FINA Aquatic World Championships after a strong 12-7 win over reigning Olympic champions the Netherlands.

A strong 4-1 opening quarter gave the Australians the lead they needed before going on to record a 4-2 second quarter which all but sealed the victory. NSWIS athlete Nicola Zagame scored two goals in the match.

Elsewhere in Shanghai, NSWIS swimmers James Magnussen and Kenneth To both made the finals of their respective events. Magnussen clocked a slick time of 47.90 in the men’s 100m freestyle to enter the final as the fastest qualifier, while Kenneth To was seventh fastest into the final of the men’s 200m individual medley.

Magnussen and To will compete in the final of their events tonight, while the Australian men’s water polo team, featuring five NSWIS athletes, takes on Canada for ninth place.
