The Australian Women’s Water Polo team, the Aussie Stingers, have claimed the bronze medal at the 2018 FINA World Cup in a thrilling play-off against Spain.

Consisting of seven NSWIS athletes, the Stingers clinched the final podium position with a nailbiting 9-8 victory over the European heavyweights, who Australia drew 7-7 with in the preliminary rounds.

Capping off a strong campaign for the Institute’s representatives, captain Rowie Webster scored five goals and was named the MVP for the bronze medal match, with goals to Keesja Gofers (1) and Hannah Buckling (1) making it an NSWIS dominated scoresheet for Australia.

A narrow 3-5 semi-final loss to the host nation Russia set up the clash against the 2014 bronze medallists, with the result making it three consecutive World Cup podiums for the Stingers.

The FINA World Cup wraps up the 2018 international season for the Women’s team, with players now set to return to their Clubs to prepare for the 2019 OVO Australian Waterpolo League.
